"What you teach your children is what you really believe in" – Cathy Warner Weatherford, author

Have a baby by me (baby), and be a millionaire – REALLY?  Is that the ladder we are teaching our youth to climb?  - NBMBAA member responding to lyrics of 50 Cent song

With rappers, actors and sports figures dominating the airwaves and the minds of today's youth, many African Americans are left with an impression of who their real role models are and should be. This panel will explore the responsibility of black entertainment and its impact on the next generation accompanied by the importance of mentorship and leader accountability in the Black community.

When role models are not in the home, or have to compete with a 24-7 barrage of negative imagery on TV, the internet, Facebook, or Twitter, how can society possibly compete and produce youth who have a fair chance at being productive, educated members of society?   Do entertainers have a responsibility to the public they serve, or are they merely an escape from real life?  Is society laying the responsibility squarely on these shoulders without looking at their own role in the process (failing school systems, poor-parenting, unqualified leadership, etc.)?  What impact will all of this have on our future as a people and as a nation?

In a society where some children fully expect to have their own reality-TV program, six-figure sweet sixteen parties and where bad behavior is rewarded, Will the Real Role Models… will look at our role – as parents, teachers, mentors, and entertainers to discuss if we are on the crux of an opportunity for growth or witnessing the downfall of a generation.
